NEWS NOTES ON SUSTAINABLE WATER RESOURCES

USGS Fisheries Program

“USGS fisheries researchers are world-class scientists. They conduct cutting-edge research to provide fisheries resource managers the scientific information they need to protect, restore, and enhance our Nation’s fisheries and their habitats.”

“Healthy watersheds and aquatic habitats are vital for sustaining productive and diverse fisheries across the United States. However, our Nation’s freshwater ecosystems are undergoing tremendous change due to a multitude of stressors, including land and water use changes; invasive species and disease outbreaks; and increased drought, flooding, and water temperatures.”

“The USGS Fisheries Program conducts cutting-edge research to understand how these changes impact the aquatic habitats supporting healthy, sustainable populations of fish and other aquatic life. Our scientists conduct relevant and objective research, develop new approaches and technologies, and disseminate scientific information needed for managers to protect, conserve, and restore freshwater habitats – streams, rivers, lakes, ponds, and wetlands – and coastal ecosystems throughout the Nation and the World.”

“As part of the USGS Fisheries program, ecological flows, or the relationships between quality, quantity, and timing of water flows and ecological response of aquatic biota and ecosystems; and related ecosystem services are being investigated.”
