Cleaning the Ganga (E)
With the Kumbh Mela taking place at Haridwar, a massive effort has been made to clean the Riven Ganga in its upper reaches. Cleaning the River Ganga and restoring its ecosystem is an important initiative of the government and towards that the Rs 20,000 crore Namami Gange mission was established. In the Muni ki Reti town near Rishikesh, the 7.5 Million Litres per Day, Sewage Treatment Plant or STP located at the mouth of the Chandreshwar Nallah is the first 4 storied sewage treatment plant in the country where the limitation of land availability was converted into an opportunity. The STP was constructed in less than 900 square meter area which is about 30% of the usual area requirement for STPs of such capacity. Mr Rajiv Ranjan Mishra, a trained Mechanical Engineer from Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer is currently Director-General of the Namami Gange project a flagship effort of the government. Mr Mishra explains how Sewage Treatment Plants are being made all over the basin in an effort to rejuvenate the River Ganga. Keeping Ganga `aviral and nirmal’ is a promise he hopes to keep.
