Major Water Projects in the Arab Region Water is an important and fundamental human need, and its shortage results in significant social, economic, and political consequences.

The Arab countries have some of the world’s highest per capita water consumption rates, approximately over 500 litres per day in comparison to less than 150 litres in most developed countries.

The World Bank estimates that climate-related water scarcity will cost the region 6% to 14% of its GDP by 2050, with 70% of the region’s GDP exposed to high or very high water stress.

Only 2% of the Arab region is covered by wetlands, and 94% of those are vulnerable to climate change. Consequently, this results in coping with future water demands in the Arab region.
