Theme Note - Membrane-Based ZLD For Industrial Use: Myth Versus Reality – March 2019 With increasingly stringent regulations on sea, river and deep well injection, the implementation of advanced water treatments is critical. While the process industry produces a wide variety of waste water and brines, their quantity and chemical composition varies and all are needed to be treated. Thus, it is very difficult to offer a suitable method of waste water treatment, since they invariably depends on a multitude of factors and is hence highly specific to each individual process. One technology which has moved into the spotlight in recent years in response to the global water shortage is zero liquid discharge (ZLD), an ideal solution for brine treatment and wastewater discharge – a complete closed loop cycle where discharge is eliminated and environmental regulations met. Creating a zero discharge solutions can be accomplished by concentrating the effluent, using various techniques, including membrane-based and multiple effect evaporation-based systems, and recovery and recycling of water. Brine discharge is one of the largest sources of wastewater from industrial processes. Because of the environmental impacts arising from improper treatment of brine discharge and more rigorous regulations of pollution control, industries have started to focus on waste minimization and improving the process of wastewater treatment. Thus, determining the potential applicability of ZLD for water treatment is crucial. Membrane-based technologies are a potentially attractive strategy that can be used. Integrating a series of membrane processes will be a viable approach to achieving ZLD for industrial use. The ZLD technology converts a high volume of liquid waste to distilled water for reuse, and solid salts that can be land filled or used as raw material for the chemical industry. It is applicable for industrial plant effluent treatment, wastewater reclamation and industrial recycling applications. Moreover, the ZLD systems market is projected to grow at a CAGR of 8.1% to US$ 6.88 bn by 2021. This growth will be driven by the implementation of stringent environmental regulations and water scarcity across the globe. Globally, two million tons of sewage, industrial and agricultural waste is discharged into the world’s waterways, and that is not counting the unregulated or illegal discharge of contaminated water. This wastewater contaminates freshwater and coastal ecosystems, threatening food security, access to safe drinking and bathing water and being a major health and environmental management challenge. Managing wastewater is intrinsically linked to management of the entire water chain. It is essential that wastewater management is considered as part of integrated, ecosystem-based management that operates across sectors and borders, freshwater and marine. Our March 2019 issue will be focusing on the challenges of ZLD in a variety of process plants and the prospects for membrane-based ZLD.
