On-Farm Nutrient Capture, Recycling
and Repurposing Pilot Tests

The National Algae Association is looking at the future of agricultural innovation. We are in collaboration with nutrient stewardship farmers by facilitating On-Farm Nutrient Capture, Recycling and Repurposing demonstration pilot tests at farm edges to capture and recycle nutrient runoff and use the nutrients to grow algae for biofertilizer and other potential products. This will help reduce amounts of nitrogen and phosphorus from high concentrated cropland entering nonpoint sources into waterways, which we already know creates harmful algae blooms in lakes and on coastlines. It could be one solution to help combat the devastating harmful algae booms on canals, lakes and coastlines that worsen every year. This initiative is a potential win-win and agriculture nutrient stewardship, the environment and water quality.

We have received positive responses from the farmers, farm management and environment groups for on-farm demonstration pilot tests on reducing nutrient runoff. Algae remediation and production technology companies along with equipment manufacturers will be providing demonstration closed-loop vertical or horizontal photobioreactors, harvesters, instrumentation, pumps and conical tanks for all farm site pilot tests.

NAA will be collaborating with the microbiology and engineering departments of college and universities located near farm locations. Student volunteers will assist in construction, testing and monitoring algae growth rates, harvest and collecting data on the technologies and equipment used to capture nutrient runoff, recycling of nutrients and repurposing algae biomass.
