Northern Ireland Water (NI Water) has announced plans to expand use of satellite leak detection technology after successful trials helped identify leaks on its network.
Satellite mounted synthetic aperture radar (SAR) technology is used to detect the leaks by penetrating below the ground surface and identifying water spreading from underground pipes.
A large part of Northern Ireland is rural meaning that much of NI Water’s 27,000km water main network is located across vast fields and hills. This makes leaks extremely challenging to locate.
NI Water head of Water Brian McCalmont said: “NI Water is very much committed to reducing leakage which has been and will continue to be an ongoing challenge for NI Water, as it is for any water utility.
