MUD Issues $41 Mil in Bonds to Help Fix Water Treatment Plant

The Metropolitan Utilities District has issued $41 million in bonds to finance repairs and upgrades at its 126-year-old Florence water treatment plant.
The bonds are part of a 20-year, $175 million capital improvement plan for the plant, which draws its water supply from the Missouri River

In 2012, MUD issued about $35 million in bonds for the work at Florence. The district plans to issue another $42 million for Florence in 2019, pending the MUD board’s approval, said Deb Schneider, the district’s chief financial officer.

The work at Florence involves replacing and upgrading old equipment to improve the plant’s reliability, extend its operating life and meet stricter water quality regulations, said Ron Reisner, the district’s chief operating officer. Florence is the largest of MUD’s three treatment plants, providing about half of the water system’s overall capacity, he said.

The new debt was part of a $203 million bond issue completed Tuesday that included refinancing existing bonds at a lower interest rate — a move that will save the district $16.4 million over the life of the bonds, Schneider said.
