There are three types of seals for slurry pumps, packing seals, impeller seals, and mechanical seals. The packing seal is very similar to the secondary impeller seal. So if we do not disassemble the pump, how can we distinguish from the appearance whether it is an impeller seal or a packing seal. Find out with us.
Let’s first understand the differences between these two sealing structures. The packing seal is a shaft seal composed of 4 packings and other sealing components. The secondary impeller seal is a shaft seal composed of two packings, a secondary impeller and other small accessories. There is an accessory in the packing seal called the stuffing box, and there is a similar accessory in the assembly of the impeller seal called the pressure reducing cap. We distinguish two types of seals from appearance, mainly looking at this accessory.
From the appearance, the exposed surface and edge of the pressure relief cover are basically flat, while the exposed surface of the packing gland is concave. This is the main difference between the two sealing methods. Secondly, when the impeller seal is lubricated by adding butter, there is an oil cup on the pressure reducing cover. The packing seal is used to seal the pipe with water. We can also distinguish based on this part.
