Mahdjoubi, the CEO and founder of Orbital Systems, has created a shower that recycles its own water. The key to Orbital’s Shower of the Future is the OrbSys system, which filters out particulate matter and microbes from drain water and then sends it back through the head.
An industrial designer by training from Sweden, Mahdjoubi came up with the idea while part of collaboration between Lund University and the Journey to Mars project at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston. The company, in fact, has been granted the Certified Space Technology designation by the United States Space Foundation. (Orbital has its own patents.)
The closed-loop cuts water consumption by 80% to 95%, he says. A ten-minute shower only takes about 5 liters, or 1.5 gallons, versus 20 gallons for a regular shower. You use a lot more water than you think: the average family will use 40 gallons a day on showering, 17% of its water.
It also dramatically cuts energy costs by 80%—the water retains its heat through the recycling process so you’re not pouring hot water down the drain anymore. A smartphone app delivers updates and information as well as will order capsules for the purification system.
