World's Largest Inland Desalination Plant

El Paso is home to the world's largest inland desalination plant and you may wonder how much brackish or salty water the plant filters.
El Paso Water said the Kay Bailey Hutchison Desalination Plant has the capacity to handle up to 27.5 million gallons of water every day.
In a typical year, the plant desalinates 1.5 billion gallons of water. But in a drought year like 2013, when the city could not rely on as much water from the Rio Grande, it filtered more than 50 percent more water than that, a total of 2.3 billion gallons.
Last year, the desalination plant provided about 4 percent of the city's total water supply.
Production at the desalination plant is expected to accelerate over the next decade to as much as 2.6 billion gallons of water each year.
