Nuclear desalination: As you said, desalination is very energy intensive. A logic approach is then to use the most energy dense technology we know, i.e using floating nuclear reactors, similar to those used in N-submarines (Adm. Rickoffer stated once : we never had any serious accident with them in our US navy) . Very soon such floating desalination plants will be offered ( 500 MW heat) of Russian or Chinese origin
