The problem, as it has always been, is 'Not Invented Here Syndrome' (NIHS) and the worst practitioners of this are academics who write, predominantly, to impress other academics especially those involved in the Nobel process. Want proof? Just send a relevant paper to someone you don't know who is engaged in that field; then test a month later whether they read it? The chances are you won't even get an acknowledgment.
