Water leak detection from up high In some places in Europe, as much as 50% of water resources are being lost before they reach the tap. The WADI project aims to address the challenge of building a water and energy efficient society by contributing to the reduction of losses in water transmission systems for water supply, irrigation and hydropower while decreasing the related energy consumption. Fluid Handling International spoke to Yolande Louvet, the initiator of the WADI project. http://www.waditech.eu/NewsEvents/Water-Leak-Detection-From-Up-High.kl ;

The world of today looking for an effective solution of water management, be it water or wastewater.

The ultra sophisticated modernization and STERILE of today's societies are based on high consumption of water and hand shot growth permanent production of wastewater.

Water consumption is not the priority of our time, on the wrong target. Our civilization is structured so that the population can consume it excessively, see wasting it even pour the beauty of the place.

Managers of highly developed States are even liked up to the point where this water vital for the population.

They even waste daily to clean the streets, squares, the attractive tourist areas. All this polluted water is rejected as what in the environment without any treatment. This civilization really needs all that water for the needs of food, health, hygiene, production, cleaning. The faucet without any measure of flow, in overconsumption: indifferent to the prospect of a lack in the future because for this population, drinking water it is vital.

We face a shortage of drinking water, it is certain but even worse, going to soon establish plants for purification of drinking water.

The real problem of drinking water is not in the management of high consumption but in the after eating that nowadays has no safe management: we reject any polluted water in the environment without providing any treatment.

Plenty of water consumed in the use of domestic needs can be purified and purified without putting in place of infrastructure all too expensive, but ineffective.

Offer items, programs on the reduction of the consumption of drinking water is a heresy, a challenge.

  2. For more than 20 years, "Volga group" has been providing engineering consulting for the water industry – firstly physical measurements and computer modeling of water flows for large water users (hydro, thermal and nuclear generation). We are partner of the Danish Hydraulic Institute (DHI) using MIKE DHI Software Family.

Volga implements water flow measurement systems based on the acoustic multi-path Transit-Time and Doppler methods in large size conduits - both closed and open. For hydro power stations, the application of this method is mostly found in turbine’s penstocks and derivation channels. The measurement system provides continuous  flow measurement with an accuracy of up to 0.5%, throughout the hydroelectric unit’s entire life.

An integration of the measurement results into plant’s SCADA allows to collect long-term historical data for different operation modes, constantly and continuously monitoring and to optimize the efficiency of each unit, redistribute the load between units in order to increase the integral performance of the plant up to 1% - 5%, and even more. For Kaplan turbines, the performance for every individual unit can be also increased.

This system allows also to verify turbine’s hydraulic performance tests and to control warranty obligations, declared by the manufacturer. Other important applications are penstock leakage detection, water billing and pipe rupture monitoring.

Monitoring of deviations of the turbine's physical operating parameters to historical data values allows to carry out preventive unit’s maintenance and repair, just when needed. This leads to lower operating costs and increases the overall lifetime of the unit.

In condenser conduits of thermal power plant using acoustic transit-time flow meters allows to estimate a real-time efficiency of the condenser. In most cases, condenser conduits have a very small straight part, that makes using multi-path acoustic Transit-Time flow meters a single way to measure discharge and temperature in conduits of thermal power plant condensers.
