Zero Mass Water is an Arizona State University spin-off startup.

The solar panel generates its own electricity, storing some of it in an integrated lithium-ion battery so that water pressure is maintained after the sun sets down. The rest of ecetricity is used to condensate and evaporate the water by running a cycle of absorption and desorption to make pure, distilled water.

One unit has a physical footprint of 2.8 m2.

The water is stored in a 30 l reservoir where minerals are added for better taste. The reservoir can be directly connected to the tap inside a household.

To produce sufficient amounts of water, multiple units can be set up.

After installing the solar panels, no maintenance is needed except changing the filter every year and replacing the mineral cartridge every five years.

Zero Mass Water’s market is not focused only on rural regions without proper water supply, but rather on urban and suburban areas. Moreover, when buying their solar panel in a first-world country, you pay half the price extra to pay for the solar panel which will be provided to a family without a safe water supply.

You choose the region and Zero Mass Water looks for families in need there, giving them the solar panel for which they only pay the transport and the installation.

This way, Zero Mass is trying to democratize water and make it available to everyone.
