E.O. Wilson famously observed that "... There is plenty of water in a desert - for a desert ecosystem." I think there is plenty of empirical evidence indicating that when we impose economic models that require external subsidies in order to function, on any system, that system is not sustainable. At the end of the day Newton's 2nd Law is still in effect. New fangled economic exploitation do not obviate that fact.
