Underwater Drones Inspect Water Quality in Indonesia

The research was carried out by a Dutch-Indonesian consortium and the Indonesian organisation Ecological observation and wetlands conservation (Ecoton), the Indonesian water board Jasa Tirta 1, the river basin management organisation BBWS and the technical university of ITS Surabaya.

The goal of the consortium is the prevent the pollution of rivers and raise awareness.

In order to decide on the strategy for river preservation and water quality management, data collection, modeling, regulation, monitoring and planning was conducted.

Water quality analysis usually takes into account only random samples, while water quality varies in different areas and in time.

The drones analyzed the sediment underneath a floating fish pond considering it was presumed lakes were responsible for high nutrient and low oxygen levels due to fish feed overuse.

The water quality varies in different locations and is related to discharge of domestic and industrial wastewater.

The goal of the consortium in the following years is to achieve sustainable, cost-effective solutions.
