PUB Gets Ceramic Membranes

Choa Chu Kang water plant to use ceramic membranes: PUB

The Choa Chu Kang Water Works (CCKWW) will become the first waterworks in Singapore to use ceramic membrane technology to increase the plant’s efficiency and reliability.

Ceramic membrane technology, which is one of the latest breakthroughs in membrane technology, is known to be more energy efficient and with a much smaller footprint and lower life cycle costs compared to existing membrane systems.

In a press release on Tuesday (Oct 27), the Public Utilities Board (PUB) announced its collaboration with PWN Technologies to use its membrane technology to upgrade part of the water treatment system at CCKWW.

Upon completion in 2018, the plant at CCKWW will become one of the largest ceramic membrane plants for drinking water treatment in the world, said PUB.

The national water agency also said that the new plant will have a daily capacity of 40 million gallons per day.

PUB’s Chief Technology Officer Harry Seah said, “PUB is always on the lookout for more innovative and cost-effective ways of treating and producing water. We have been studying and testing the merits of ceramic membrane technology for a few years now, and we are satisfied with the results. Both polymeric and ceramic membranes can now be considered in our other waterworks when they are due for upgrading.”
