Arsenic enriched groundwater is one of the most serious problems related to public health in the river island district of Majuli, Assam.
Taking the grim problem very seriously, the DC Majuli Sri Pallav Gopal Jha has taken up an initiative to develop Arsenic Free Model Villages in the GPs most affected with Arsenic contamination above permissible limit.
DC of Majuli in September 2016, Sri Jha first came to know the arsenic contamination problem from the local civil society. He then studied & researched more on the problem through internet and tried to explore possible alternative solutions to ensure pure drinking water to the poor people exposed to arsenic contamination in the district.
In December 2016, Shri Pallav Jha got information of a low cost arsenic removal filter developed by a Chennai based company and invited Ruuris Innovatives to provide sample water filters for testing and validations. The Arsenic removal water filters were tested for a period of 5 months for quality and consistency.
After being satisfied by the test results provided by the PHE lab at Majuli, the DC informed the honorouble Chief Minister of Assam.
