Costs and optimisation options for monitoring of industrial dischargers
Published on by Torsten Franz, Employee at Aquabench in Case Studies
Operators of public wastewater systems should regulate the discharge of industrial wastewater into their facilities due to water laws and health and safety regulations:
- to protect the public from harm, danger, and nuisance
- to protect operator’s personnel from damage, dangers, and hazards
- to protect the sewerage facilities and to not to impair their optimal functionality.
The regulation must be supported by suitable monitoring measures. Typical instruments are:
- On-site inspections, inspections of pre-treatment facilities
- Controlling certificates and self-monitoring documents
- Wastewater and biofilm sampling.
In a long-term project ten German monitoring bodies or cities, respectively, collect and share data about their monitoring, and discuss current issues and solutions. Selected results are presented in this article. E. g., the median value of the specific expense is approx. 700 EUR per monitoring point and year. The process personnel-driven with expenses for wages and salaries of 75% of the total expenses.
