Investors are betting on a startup in Research Triangle Park that wants to change the way water is purified.
NALA Membranes, the brainchild of mother-daughter entrepreneurs Sue Mecham and Judy Riffle, has closed on $1.2 million of a planned $3 million convertible note. It’s money that Mecham said will help the firm finally get to commercialization.
Morrisville, N.C. (September 13, 20232) – NALA Membranes, Inc. has been selected as a finalist for the NC TECH Awards CleanTech Company award. The NC TECH Awards is North Carolina's only statewide technology awards program that recognizes innovation, growth and leadership in the tech sector and is presented by the NC TECH (North Carolina Technology Association).
NALA Membranes has removed and replaced the weak link in cleaning water for reuse. It’s new generation of reverse osmosis membranes solve the water treatment’s industry’s biggest problem – the inability to be cleaned without breaking down.
“Our membranes reduce the cost, complexity and climate impact of cleaning water for reuse. Today’s membranes clog and require increasing amounts of pressure which translates into higher energy, which in turns means a higher carbon footprint and a rise in greenhouse gasses. We solve all this pervasive problem with a powerful platform of new materials”, said CEO Sue Mecham, who with her mother and co-founder founded the RTP company in 2018.
“For over 20 years, NC TECH has celebrated companies, organizations and individuals for outstanding achievement at the NC TECH Awards. As a finalist this year, NALA Membranes has distinguished itself as one of the state’s innovative and emergent leaders,” stated Brooks Raiford, NC TECH’s President and CEO. “We are very grateful to NC Tech for being our champions, and for recognizing us again having won the Cleantech Award in 2021”, smiled Sue Mecham as she looked at her team of scientists, engineers and business professionals.
