The award winning Kerry Central Regional Water Supply Scheme at Lough Guitane is one of the largest in the country and can provide 51 million litres of treated drinking water every day to over 62,000 customers in the communities of Killarney, Tralee, Castleisland and Castlemaine.
Killarney is “Ireland’s tourism capital”, receiving 1.1 million visitors annually, supporting over 3,000 local jobs and generating €410 million every year. The €30 million upgrade to the Kerry Central Water Supply Scheme is a key element in ensuring the continued economic prosperity of the region by putting in place the necessary infrastructure for the provision of a safe and reliable water supply and safeguard the region’s reputation as a world famous tourist destination.
The scheme’s new water treatment plant is amongst the largest in the country and provides over 50 million litres of drinking water every day, with the improved quality of water available now meaning the 62,000 local customers have been removed from the Environmental Protection Agency’s Remedial Action List (RAL).
