Earthquake in Nepal Kills Hundreds and Levels Buildings

An earthquake measuring 7.9 magnitude, and only 2 km deep, struck east of Pokhara in Nepal on Saturday causing buildings in the capital Kathmandu to collapse.The death toll from the powerful quake has risen to 688, most of it in the Kathmandu Valley.

KATHMANDU, Nepal -- A powerful earthquake struck Nepal Saturday, killing at least 1,180 people across a swath of four countries as the violently shaking earth collapsed houses, levelled centuries-old temples and triggered avalanches on Mt. Everest. It was the worst tremor to hit the poor South Asian nation in over 80 years.
