How can we Solve the Problem of Water Contamination in India?
Published on by Dr. Mridula sharma, Research Analyst at NCGG in Social
As we know, in India water contamination is a big problem.
We are facing the problem of water-borne diseases. In urban areas, people can afford a water purifier, but in rural areas, people are drinking contaminated water and facing horrible situation.
Can we have any affordable cheap method to purify the water.

There is Pureit created by Hindustan Lever. It costs only 2000 rupees and recharge of purifying elements like coal filter etc is just 350 fro 2000 litres. What more can one ask for. I have it and its great since 10 years now.

Your Tension is really generic.
However, Water Purifier from Kent could be one option in these type of situations.I also purchased one, It is from Kent, It is working totally fine,it is not that expensive, however the quality is deserving of the price. I am Satisfied with it.

Great that there has an open discussion on water ans water related issues. Technological solutions are ok in urban or pere-urban areas where minimum education and facilities are there. but today few areas in Odisha is still not communication facilities or transportation including electricity or motorable and all weather roads. people are using flow water or stagnant water from stream, thus there are more water borne disease, malnutrition, malaria, gastroentitis . Minimum education is so poor .
There should be simultaneous programs on education, training capacity building exposure and technological innovation can work well.
Thus deepening governance on water, food and education can be put foth including innovation,
Please post mail to udyama.pradep@gmail.com if you want to do even small things with community. thus there a great field of development and business. opportunity is plenty. regards

Sir,
I am agree with you but the Water Management is in worst condition in urban areas this is right that we can control it easily but what about close drainage in Metropolitan cities like Mumbai,Delhi, Calcutta etc.In rainy season we can see that worst situation of these cities, contaminate water and lake of drinking water is a big problem in our cities people are helpless to spend their half salary to buy drinking water. We need a proper solution to fight this problem.

Dear Dr. Sharma,
I would like to present a very simple fact pertaining to the nature of the planet on which we live, and I leave behind any comment about the validity of your question.
Let us consider any human activity whether it is commercial or residential, if you discharge your treated wastewater on the soil surface to go underground in your backward, then you dig a water well about 50 m away from your treated wastewater discharge point, you will be able to get potable water needing some filtration and probably some exposition to UV. (Even some local engineering codes in the US, are allowing this design).

Dear Dr. Sharma, your concern is so valid. From my own observations while being in South India earlier this year, the solution is a combination of education (simple hygiene practices such as avoiding open defecation, washing hands), community involvement installing sanitary equipment such as toilets (notably Dr. Bindeshwar Pathak from Sulabh International), and lastly actual water purification using affordable, sustainable, and low maintenance solutions, such as the Merlin ECO system, which I have introduced on my AquaSPE landing page. For full disclosure, I do not have any ownership or interest in Merlin ECO, just happen to know its founder and met his first customer. As I was impressed with its affordability, test results in the lab and in the field, the idea is to build a local eco system by building an assembly and training Franchise in India to further reduce cost ("Make in India"). Without local community engagement it will be difficult to achieve any meaningful adoption rate. Pleased to be of assistance. - Bert Wank

Dear Dr. Sharma,
Most of the residential subdivisions in North America (USA and Canada) are totally dependent underground water supply, probably it is still an appropriate solution for India. Avoiding direct supply from rivers and relying on the natural cleaning of the soil is a great idea.

It should be noted that much of contaminated water sources in India are a result of lack of sanitation. We must put some effort into preventative measures, not just solutions to treat the problems. Everyone would love an "affordable cheap method" to purify water, but the word purify is subjective. Water quality in India can be improved through increased use and building of proper sanitation facilities that reroute excrement away from drinking water sources.

Dr. Mridula Sharma,
We were involved with such a project in Karnataka. The Karnataka state government under rural water supply scheme set up Water Vending machines using RO. Post treatment of RO was carried out by Purojal DW, a high end disinfectant produced and manufactured by us. For a specified volume of water dispensed the rural consumer was charged a rate. Smart cards would be swiped and a fixed volume of drinking water would be dispensed.
This is a good way to provide good, hygienic clean drinking water for the rural mass.
If you wish to discuss the matter in detail then you can contact me by email at advenvtech@gmail.com.

The only way to solve the water contamination in India is by doing the following;
1. All sources of contamination must be plugged and if the govt cannot do it the people must come together and ensure that there is no pollutant going into any water body.
2. Nature is the best healer - Allow for nature to take her course. Let wild plants grow and then once a few rains go by that water body will thrive automatically.
3. If that water body is being used then purification or filtering properties of plants must be used there are many species that help purefy water.
4. Allow for the ecosystem to flourish within that water body.
5. Harvest and consume the water and the biomass sustainably.
6. Live a happy content with nature Lifestyle :)

There are two solar desalination methods which also purify water where the contaminants have a boiling point higher than that of water or are destroyed by heat. One is the fresnel lens design suitable for positioning over contaminated well and for smaller domestic situations, and the second for inland lakes and offshore use. Both are zero carbon, inexpensive to maintain, and require no chemicals or membranes. Details from rosjonesenvedu@hotmail.com

Aside from using sophisticated commercial products, it is possible to purify water with basic chemicals and filtration. If the source water is turbid then coagualation and flocculation followed by media (sand) filtration would be needed. This will also remove some of the pathogens. In the next step filtration over fresh activated carbon will remove most of the soluble pollutants and will improve the final disinfection by sodium hypochlorite (bleach) without generating noxious byproducts.

We build mobile water purification units on solar. The water costs of the units are 0,01 Ct /0,001 Ct per liter. 1 Cent for 1000L.
