Water Footprint of Humanity
Published on by Arjen Hoekstra, RIP 1967-2019 - University of Twente - Professor water management
In February our study on the water footprint of humanity was published in PNAS. We calculated and mapped humanity’s water footprint at a high spatial resolution and estimated the water footprint for each nation and economic sector. The study reveals how different products and nations contribute to freshwater consumption and pollution across the globe. The findings may help governments to establish commodity production and consumption policies aimed at managing the planet’s finite freshwater supplies more effectively. Any ideas on how we can move foreward, improving estimates and making this sort of data inform policy making?
