Water shortages the real threat to Iran
Published on by Mesi M.
Kalantari underlined that all the sources of natural water in Iran were drying up, including Lake Urumieh, Bakhtegan, Tashak, Parishan and others, and that he anticipates a crisis.

Certainly our area (Middle East and North Africa) is a water scarce area. What is crucial is how we manage this little amount of water. I highly value the propositions of water demand management including the use of grey water systems and water efficiency in agriculture, water saving at households and industries, etc. In fact there are many good projects that implemented such approaches in Jordan, Turkey, Tunisia and others.

You are very welcome Mesi. There is a simple modification to domestic waste water that could help to significantly reduce demand if it was rolled out. I have installed an inexpensive grey water system which has been serving our vegetable garden for several years without any need for maintenance except cleaning out the tank occasionally to remove lint build up from washing clothes. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sw4I1N8y66s

Operation OASIS is a plan to establish new coastal forests in arid regions to increase rainfall inland from the coastline. The removal of coastal vegetation is what caused the deserts to form and expand. Iran has the potential to restore it's rainfall by using treated waste water to irrigate community based reforestation. Easier than one might think. Who do we need to talk to to make this happen? Indigenous sources of waste water can be used to establish a pilot project of sufficient scale to provide a demonstration of the effect. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KHhXqzk7LhE More information: http://operationoasis.com

Coastal reforestation with salt tolerant species of trees and shrubs can bring about local climate change http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uxlp8G6UiW0 And in doing so can help to arrest coastal erosion by providing a living bio-shield capable of withstanding a tsunami and severe storm surges.

In order to make any improvements regarding the issue of water scarcity in our world today, more than one solution is necessary. Although water scarcity is not a substantial problem to every country currently, many countries feel the effects of water scarcity and the issue must be addressed. If this issue is not dealt with soon, it will become a problem for many other countries in the near future, some which are already beginning to feel the effects. There are several actions that would be effective in preserving and conserving water.

No only Iran our planet is under threat of water scarcity. 2.4 billion people will lack improved water and sanitation in 2015.
