NEWS NOTES ON SUSTAINABLE WATER RESOURCES National Groundwater Association Sustainability Initiative The National Ground Water Association has been working with the Association of American State Geologists, the Ground Water Protection Council, and the Interstate Council on Ground Water Policy to gather information to build a national picture of groundwater monitoring. We have concluded the compilation of responses to the Joint State Ground Water Quality and Level Monitoring surveys relating to state and regional ambient groundwater. Click here for the results to both surveys.http://www.ngwa.org/Advocacy-Awareness/current%20initiatives/Pages/Groundwater-sustainability.aspxGround water is a critical component of the nation’s water resources. Globally, ground water resources dwarf surface water supplies. Approximately 25% of the earth’s total fresh water supply is stored as ground water, while less than 1% is stored in surface water resources such as rivers, lakes, and soil moisture. The rest of the fresh water supply is locked away in polar ice and glaciers. Because ground water is hidden, the resource is often forgotten or misunderstood. In fact, until 1984 courts in Ohio held ground water movement “secret” and “occult”.
