A simple do’s and don’ts for unclogging the drains We must agree the clogged drains usually occur when we least want them and almost everyone has faced the issue of unclogged drains- may it be at the mid night, at the time you are hurrying for work or some really unexpected situations. Depending on the clog and the place, it can be messy. The simplest and the best way for this issue is proper maintenance to avoid the same. Let us see what we can do at first to prevent the clogs Be proactive Keep a check of what is been flushed or dumped in the drain. Whether is a kitchen sink or bathroom flush, ensure they should be used for the purpose they are meant for and not treated as an alternative for the trash bin. It is ok to slip some food particles down the kitchen drain but do not flush oil, fat or grease down the same. They may seem a smooth liquid to pass down, but it may stick to the walls of the drain and allow other waste to stick to it letting the drains to clog. Even in flush do not use it as a bin for disposing paper, hair, cotton ball, hair, cosmetics, baby wipes, bandages etc. They are supposed to be tossed in the trash bin. But when dumped in the toilet gets stuck in the passage leading to a clog. Check early signals: Even if you are absolutely careful, still keep an eye on the early signals that may lead to clogged drains. This saying perfectly fits here; “a stitch in time saves nine”. The alert minds and eyes can help you to save from the disaster of clogged drains. You may see a slow drain, a bad odour or such unusual changes in the plumbing that needs attention. A simple ignorance will invite the blunder but a careful check and prompt action can help to save from mess. Regular cleaning can save: Well it’s a dirty task and no one likes to do it in regular basis, but believe me a regular cleaning process can save the situation of the clogged drains. Not let us see what are the do’s when we see a clogged drain: Now as you have encountered the clogged drain, first- don’t panic. Now follow three rule steps: plunger, water and chemicals and if nothing works- then of course, professional plumber are for rescue. Plunger: This is the best tool to clean the clogged drain and it can be used anywhere. It is the most simple to use tool and the most powerful option for cleaning. Hot water: If the plunger helps to some extent then the hot water can be the next step for te rescue process. This can help to remove the oil or grease clogs and even some clogs from the flush as well. Natural chemicals : Try a vinegar and hot water solution for the cleaning process. Even the soda and water solution can be a good and natural option for unclogging. Plumber snake: The plumbing snake can be used if the above steps doesn’t seems to be a good option. This is easily available with all the plumbers. Do not use acid for the cleaning. This may look as the most convenient option, but not all pipes can withhold the chemical reaction and can vanish leading to worse situations. Even they also ruins the porcelain of the sink toilet bowls. Do not use chemical before plunger. It may lead to spill or splash if the same which may harm you. Do not flush diapers, hair, dental floss, coffee grounds, pet litter, and other non-disposable items down the flush. Do not pour oil down a drain. Do not wait for clog to happen. Address the issue before it happens It is advisable to go for regular maintenance of the plumbing of your house to keep everything in good shape and flow.
