With two out of three people projected to live in cities or other urban areas by 2050, urban rewilding could protect city-dwellers from some of the worst impacts of the climate crisis.
The growing global trend of reintroducing nature into cities has the potential to reverse biodiversity loss, protect from urban overheating and boost climate resilience, say researchers.
Rewilding emerged in the 1990s, aiming to restore ecosystem balances in large wilderness areas. The reintroduction of wolves into Yellowstone Park in 1995 is thought to be one of the most successful cases of rewilding. The project set the benchmark for future initiatives working to re-balance fauna, predator and prey.
