Water utilities race to catch up with soaring inflation and a massive uptick in costs from energy to construction.

Only 14% of cities managed to increase tariffs above their country's inflation rate. Faced with spiralling inflation and a substantial increment in operating costs driven by global energy price hikes, climbing labour prices, and a spike in construction costs caused by supply chain issues, utilities are finding themselves caught between steeply rising costs and political pressure to consider affordability.

GWI’s eleventh annual Global Water Tariff Survey – released on 22nd September 2022 – has found that although water tariffs saw a historically high average increase, the number of cities seeing above-inflation water rate rises has plummeted over the past two years.
