Hur al-Azim International Wetland is located in the southwest of Iran and at the end of Karkheh River with the common border of Iran and Iraq.
1/3 of its area is in Iran and another 2/3 in Iraq. In 1973, its area was about 750,000 hectares, of which only 29,000 hectares remain, which is equivalent to 54% of the area of this wetland has been destroyed. Today, this wetland is facing the problem of dehydration and drying.
In recent years, due to the construction of access roads, digging oil wells and reducing the inflow of water to the wetland through the Karkheh Dam, its area has been reduced and has created many environmental problems for the habitat of organisms.
The Wetland (lagoon) is home to more than 20 species of fish as well as animals such as the soft-shelled turtle, boar, jackal, rabbit and sheng.
The presence of this wetland prevents the occurrence of fine dust and sand and dust storms.
