Improving the Performance of Currently Operating Bioreactors

Cincinnati-based company Water Warriors plans to solve a problem that is killing fish and wildlife around the globe, and is a particular issue in this part of the country, cursing waterways all the way to the Gulf of Mexico.
Nitrogen and phosphorous flow from farm fields and homeowners’ lawns in heavy concentrations from this part of the country, particularly in places drained by the Great Miami River, sometimes creating toxic algae blooms and a fish-killing dead zone the size of New Jersey in the gulf. The chemicals also often are insufficiently removed during cities’ sewage treatment processes.
Water Warriors uses bacteria, microscopic bubbles and “homes for bacteria” to remove the two chemicals. Those bubbles, about the width of human hairs, can remain underwater about four hours, giving bacteria oxygen they need to more quickly do their work and cutting sewer utilities’ energy costs about in half.
