Kerry Caslow Brings a Wealth of Knowledge and a Passion for Water to Her Work

In-Situ:   So, Kerry, how did you get into the field of water monitoring?

Kerry:  I’ve had an interest in the environment ever since I was a kid. First it was meteorology. I’d read the weather reports with my family, and I was passionate about hurricanes. I had a special interest class at school, and if a hurricane came through, I’d turn on the TV in class and watch the coverage.

I was accepted into Georgia Tech’s meteorology program, but after taking a few classes, like geochemistry and oceanography, I realized that I enjoyed water as a whole and the field work that went along with it. I switched to an environmental science concentration, where I was still able to learn about the severe storms that I loved but from different environmental and social perspectives.

In-Situ:   And where did that take you?

Kerry:  I got my degree in environmental science, got an internship with the U.S. Geological Survey, and that led to a nine-year career there.

In-Situ: What was your focus at the USGS?

Kerry:  I was primarily involved in an urban hydrology project out of the Atlanta office. We had about 35 water quality monitoring sites that also had water level, discharge we could correlate from water level, and precipitation gauges—it was a stormwater monitoring project. We tied the water quality and level and discharge components in with discrete stormwater sampling to calculate loads of sediment, nutrients, metals and organic and inorganic matter, with the overall goal of reporting findings to the counties, who’d report it to the Environmental Protection Division, to meet state NPDES requirements.

In-Situ:   Sounds like great experience.

Kerry:  I learned a lot. And then I was able to share that. I taught some classes at the HIF and traveled down to Brazil to teach there. Then I went to work at YSI, where I was an outdoor water monitoring specialist. I helped customers with their challenges, developed technical content and worked on new product development.

In-Situ:   And now you’re here!

Kerry:  Yes, and really happy to be a part of the team! I’m particularly excited about the company’s focus on new technology. What I hear most from customers are concerns about their sites: How often do I need to go out? How can I control costs? How do I prevent fouling? I’ve learned a lot about how to setup and maintain sites economically and some of the new technology we have and will soon have will make that even easier, especially when it comes to continuous monitoring. 

In-Situ:   What do you want people to take way from your webinar?

Kerry:  I’m hoping that regardless of experience level, people will hear something they can immediately take with them into the field to make their lives a little easier. I’m excited to share some of the tips and tricks I’ve learned over the years and hear from them what their challenges are. Maybe we can solve them together.
