Trending Tech Company - BioGill
Published on by Water Network Research, Official research team of The Water Network in Technology
BioGill is a biotechnology company that manufactures unique above ground, attached growth bioreactors and biofilters used worldwide in water treatment systems.
At the heart of every BioGill unit are specially manufactured, patented nano ceramic media known as “gills”. These gills provide the ideal, oxygen rich environment for biomass to grow and consume nutrients from the wastewater stream. Microorganisms colonise the gills and grow into a dense, active biomass that consumes nutrients. The BioGill solution delivers superior biological water treatment, at lower energy and lower cost.

Technology
BioGill manufactures above ground, attached growth, bioreactors that deliver compact, energy efficient water treatment solutions. Key to BioGill performance efficiency is the growth of healthy biomass on the patented nano ceramic media, known as “gills”.
Our technology relies on the availability of suitable nutrient mix in the wastewater and the availability of oxygen transfer to the gill structure. With these in place, BioGill units maximise the load of treating biology, which in turn consume the organic nutrients found in the waste stream.
The BioGill bioreactor is a secondary treatment process that removes soluble nutrients (BOD/COD and Nitrogen) from the water. The process also allows for a reduction in: Fat, Oil and Grease (FOG); Turbidity; Odour; and Suspended Solids through secondary functions.
The gill structure means an above ground, non-submerged culture can attach to the gills as a biofilm. The flexible gills allow the biofilm access to oxygen.

BioGill Packaged Solution
This is a complete, continuous biological system with stand, tanks and piping for fast and easy installation. The philosophy behind this system is to minimise site specific design and installation requirements and utilise readily available components, to create a cost effective packaged solution.
Using the BioGill Tower as the cornerstone, this system is ideally suited to small scale treatment plants with low volume and high BOD wastewater, such as candy producers, breweries and wineries.
Available first in Australia, the BioGill Packaged Solution will soon be rolled out to other international markets.
Key features include:
- Modular & scalable, simply add more units as production increases.
- Stand & tank make the BioGill Tower a plug and play biological solution.
- Flexible & re-deployable.
- Easy onsite installation & small footprint
- Low maintenance and operating costs.
BioGill® Ultra
Containerized, "plug & play" complete secondary treatment solution.
For system integrators and plant managers, the BioGill Ultra delivers a system that is easy to install, operate and maintain. The BioGill Ultra comes as a stand-alone container with ten internal treatment cartridges, external piping and connections.
Add on options include:
- Control skid with PLC, connection flanges, pump and blower mounts
- Recirculation pumps
- Air scouring blower
The Ultra is ideally suited as a retrofit for pre-treatment on under-performing plants, increasing plant capacity or as a standalone biological system in Food & Beverage production and Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs).
The BioGill Ultra provides a number of benefits including:
- No extensive civil works with low site disruption during installation and operation
- Easy retrofit to boost performance & capacity of existing WWTP
- An automated, self-cleaning option
- Angled floor for easy sludge removal
- Modular & scalable
