In April 2020 Williams et al. published a research article in the AAAS journal "Science" entitled "Large contribution from anthropogenic warming to an emerging North American megadrought", wherein a team of noted climatologists and paleo-climatologists concluded that hydrological modeling, 1200 years of tree ring analysis, and summer soil moisture records and the overlay of recent anthropogenically caused climate trends indicate that Southwest North America is trending towards the worst "megdrought" since the year 800 CE.
The continued lack of any significant rain- and snow- fall in California since said research article appears to be further confirmation of the trend that southwest North America is trending towards this "megadrought" scenario.
Governments and water organizations must now consider the likelihood of a megadrought in their long term planning to insure sustainable/adequate water supplies.
