China's toilet revolution flush with opportunity for Japan water treaters

China is stepping up construction of water treatment facilities in rural areas, spurring Japanese companies such as Sumitomo Corp. and Toray Industries to jump into a market projected to double in the current decade.

Sumitomo newly acquired 29 sewage treatment facilities while Toray plans to offer its own technology for water treatment. Both companies will invest at least 10 billion yen ($87.8 million) each into the business.

The moves follow the release of a five-year plan by the Chinese government this month to improve living standards in farming villages. This includes a rural "toilet revolution," which calls for the widespread installation of toilets and construction of sewage treatment centers.

Trading house Sumitomo has set up a joint venture company with Beijing Capital, a water supply heavyweight. The new company, known as Capital Summit Environment Investment, now operates 32 sewage treatment centers, with capacity totaling 1.3 tons a day.
