Welcome article on Advances In Membrane Technologies  Dear Patron, Greetings from Water Today! We are glad to announce the 2nd Edition of LANKA WATER EXPO 2017 scheduled on 7th, 8th & 9th July 2017 at Sri Lanka Exhibition & Convention Centre, Colombo. The Event will be focusing on building networks with greater collaboration between different stakeholders in the water & wastewater fraternity and to explore how we can harness innovation to address the most urgent issues facing the world’s water supply.Every year, Water Today publishes EXPO SPECIAL exclusively catering to Water and Wastewater Industry. The Expo Special will be a massive and extensive compilation showcasing addresses, orientation and contact details of exhibitors’ profile who have participated in LANKA WATER EXPO 2017. The Expo Special will also be focusing on “Advances In Membrane Technologies”. Theme note - Advances In Membrane Technologies – July 2017 issueMembrane technology has evolved as a well-accepted filtration method in many applications in the recent decades. Once considered as a complex and futuristic technology, today the progress has revolutionized various industrial processes, biotechnology development and the purification of municipal water supply. The ability of membranes to separate impurities from a liquid stream also makes it an ideal solution for wastewater recycling. Besides, membrane filtration and separation technologies have undergone substantial technological advancement. The application of membrane technologies where it plays a key role include - water & wastewater treatment, industrial, laboratory, medical, food & beverage, and research applications to purify, concentrate, sterilize, or separate samples.  The biggest technical challenge with the use of membranes for wastewater treatment is the high potential for fouling. Membrane fouling, which can be caused by colloids, soluble organic compounds, and microorganisms that are typically not well removed with conventional pretreatment methods, increases feed pressure and requires frequent membrane cleaning. This leads to reduced efficiency and a shorter membrane life. Other technical barriers may include the complexity and expense of the concentrate (residuals) disposal from high-pressure membranes.Treating wastewater with membranes is on the rise. It is not only a viable option, but often a smart one when considering plant upgrades and capacity expansion. Our July issue will focus on advancements in the membrane technologies that make water treatment processes more efficient and effective. We would like to invite you to share your experiences in the form of articles, technical papers and case studies with our readers. Please inform us of your intent to contribute at the earliest, so that we can evaluate the articles for the publication.
