Plastic pollution in the Mediterranean Sea: SUEZ supports the 7th Continent Scientific Expedition

A team of CNRS scientists will embark on the ship Expedition 7e continent to study the pollution of the water cycle by nano and microplastic particles in the Mediterranean Sea. SUEZ is supporting this NGO, which contributes to improving the state of knowledge on marine pollution.

As ocean protection is one of SUEZ's major commitments, the Group has been supporting Expedition 7e continent for more than 4 years. The action of this NGO is translated by expeditions to study, to better limit, pollution of the marine environment by human activity.

A new scientific expedition will be conducted from September 20 to October 15, 2019, in order to measure the presence of plastics at different depths in the water column and in the air above the sea surface, in order to better understand their transport conditions in natural environments.

The 7th Continent boat will analyze in particular the areas of accumulation of plastic waste. Several phenomena will be studied such as the distribution of micro and nano plastics in the water column, how micro and nano plastics interact with organisms or the way plastic can be part of the water cycle.

SUEZ puts its solutions at the service of the protection of the ocean

80% of the plastic waste present in the oceans comes from human activity on the continents. The fight against ocean pollution must, therefore, take place on Earth. SUEZ develops concrete solutions deployed on water and waste cycles to limit the pollution of the oceans, by retaining the sources of pollution upstream from the coastlines and watersheds (notably through the treatment of wastewater and by the collection and recovery of waste).

SUEZ's support for Expedition 7 e Continent aims to improve the state of scientific knowledge on plastic pollution of the seas, and thus contribute to accelerating the fight against pollution of the seas and oceans.
