Turning fishing line spares into...

Around fishing harbours it is some way usual to see some left ends of fishing lines, mainly monofilament of nylon. In the Azores the main fishing gear is the handline and bottom longline, using this monofilament made of nylon. Does anyone knows any projects that studies the way to reuse or recycle these fishing lines leftovers?
I've been through the article http://www.abc.net.au/science/articles/2014/02/21/3948996.htm and this company, http://www.econyl.com/regeneration-system/ , but that's all I've found. Any ideas?
