What does an oxcart teach us about sustainable water supply in rural Africa?
Published on by Rik Haanen, SMART Centre manager at Jacana Business Empowerment in Technology
Most African countries have population density below 50 people per square km.
Can we expect these small communities to maintain expensive pumps?
Who will invest in a deep borehole and expensive pump for a group of less than 50 people?
Or do we have to look for alternatives?
Maybe a simple oxcart provides an answer (watch the video and read the paper):
Boosting rural economies and creating sustainable water supplies for the most difficult to reach.
