Social Enterprise Showcase: Banka Bioloo – Nature-friendly answer to nature’s call
Published on by dany tade, Consultant in Non Profit
Namita Banka is used to toilet humour. And why not? It's the humble toilet that is helping her laugh all the way to the bank even as it helps her solve one of the most pressing problems in the country - clean water and sanitation. Her social enterprise Banka BioLoo Pvt Ltd hopes to change India's answer to nature's call to a more nature-friendly one. The company's star products are the ‘bio-toilets' and ‘bio-tanks', which decompose 99% of human waste in a short period of time and enable recycling of waste water.

The only limitation I believe is that this is designed and applicable for a set number of users. It may not be viable for a community toilet or lower income group common toilet in rural or urban setting. From the basics it appears like a modified septic system with a lab developed culture in lieu of a seeding sludge and compartments that would filter the wastewater. I am told the culture has a great temperature resistence -20 to +50 degrees centigrade so would be good for sub zero conditions where usage is also appropriate as per the design.

This is interesting and smart technology worthy promoting. It can really solve problems in urban and peri-urban settings. Some people in the rural areas may buy the technology when convinced. However, for other rural African communities, besides cultural barriers, use of water might be a challenge where access is still a major problem.
