About this Event
Panel Session I (thirty minutes)
From September 11 – 13, Triple-I/Resilience Accelerator and The Wharton Risk Center sponsored their Third Annual Hack-for-Resilience competition at the PennAppsXXI Hackathon, the first and largest student-run hackathon in North America.
Over three days more than 38 teams of students competed for honors in two categories—Best Overall Hack-for-Resilience and Best Application of Insurtech.
Two winning teams were selected to be entered into October 22’s Lightning Rounds and Resilience Innovation Showcase:
• Best Overall Hack-for-Resilience: AIR.LY
Inspired by the development team members’ experiences during recent California wildfires, AIR.LY is billed as “the one-stop shop [for finding] safe outdoor retreats during wildfires.” AIR.LY delivers vital, in-real-time assistance to an often-overlooked group: persons afflicted with respiratory issues or other health complications.
• Best Application of Insurtech: INSURA
Developed to get households into a “resilience frame of mind,” INSURA uses location and historical loss data to incentivize catastrophe resilience by making a game of preparedness and mitigation. Users enter information about their homes and known risks, and INSURA suggests mitigation activities and common household maintenance chores. Players are scored by calculated potential insurance premium savings.
Panel Session II: (thirty minutes)
ThermalGate: a quick effective measurement of elevated body temperature for detecting COVID-19 and related ailments using artificial intelligence and unique screening capabilities. Installed at entrances to commercial and industrial buildings, ThermalGate augments other security and protective technologies with an active and less intrusive means of reducing outbreaks. ThermalGate uses proprietary software integration including: AI detection algorithm for enhanced, accuracy & accurate facial location - Complies w/ FDA thermal imaging best practices - 3 Infrared Color Palettes - Adjustable Temperature Threshold - Instant Temperature Processing - Data Storage & Post-Processing - Designed & Developed in The USA
Water On Wheels for Disaster Response: A small, portable, mini-water treatment system quickly deployed on site until infrastructure is restored. Capable of providing thousands of gallons of safe drinkable water a day. Integrated EPA-reviewed components, the "WOW" system includes: Fillable Filter Canisters • Optional UV Sanitation • Duel Fuel Generator • Solar & 12v Battery • ChlorineGenerator • ¾ -1HP Jet Pump • Self-Illuminated • Distribution Manifolds • (2) BleachMakers for • Encased Steel Disinfectant Tubular Frame • Communication • (2) 1,250 Gallon Charging Ports Bladder Tanks
