Industrial Water Week: An Overdue Celebration!
Published on by James McDonald, PE, CWT, Technology and Marketing Manager at Chem-Aqua, Inc. in Social
Industrial Water Week is a celebration of industrial water treatment and those that practice it!
There is a Donut Day, Nation Indoor Plant Week, Chemistry Week, Pizza Day, Star Wars Day, and even Pi Day. Why not Industrial Water Week! It's long past due!
Seriously, industrial water treatment is a noble profession of engineers, chemists, salesmen, managers, administrators, etc. It is a "recession insulated" career because most manufacturing facilities and institutions require water treatment to keep their doors open in both good times and bad.
Industrial water treatment professionals help industrial, manufacturing, institutional, and commercial users conserve water, reuse water, minimize corrosion, control scale, and inhibit microbiological activity. Their toolbox of tricks includes chemistry, equipment, and service.
- Chemistry involves both the components of water and their interactions. Chemistry also involves knowing what other chemical components to add to control scale, corrosion, and microbiological activity.
- Equipment involves knowing how unit operations such as water softeners, reverse osmosis units, dealkalizers, demineralizers, etc. will affect the water chemistry and characteristics for the benefit of the end user.
- Service involves utilizing one's experience and management abilities to help the end user wisely use water, minimize wastewater, protect the environment, control scale, reduce corrosion, and control microbiological activity.
