Lakewood Officials Planning $25 Million Wastewater Treatment Facility

LAKEWOOD, Ohio - City officials are taking a proactive approach to achieve compliance with the state and federal Environmental Protection Agency's Clean Water Act regarding storm sewers.

"The bigger challenge is the design, redesign and maintenance of our sewer system in big storms," Lakewood Mayor Mike Summers said. "We've a proposed $25 million expansion of our wastewater treatment facility that will only be activated in big storms. 

"This is huge and such a complicated subject. Basically, now we've got a sewer system that was designed to overflow into the lake untreated when you had big rainstorms. Those overflows by today's standards are unacceptable."

How to deal with that volume of water is currently the city's engineering challenge with the proposed solution being a high-rate treatment facility located next to the existing wastewater treatment plant.
