The wastewater treatment plant, located in Woodbridge, has achieved 100 percent regulatory compliance for the last nine years. The Service Authority will be recognized at NACWA’s Utility Leadership Conference on July 24 in Boston.

“I commend the staff at the H.L. Mooney Advanced Water Reclamation Facility for their efforts in 2017,” said General Manager Dean Dickey. “Environmental stewardship is integral to the Service Authority’s vision.”

The Service Authority’s wastewater treatment process significantly reduces the amount of nitrogen and phosphorus released into Neabsco Creek, a tributary of the Potomac River. An excess of these nutrients can fuel the growth of algae blooms that can lead to low oxygen “dead zones” in the Chesapeake Bay.

“Adhering to all state and federal regulations for nine years in a row is an amazing accomplishment,” said Service Authority Process Engineer Maureen O’Shaughnessy. “It’s proof that our folks take an immense amount of pride in doing their jobs to preserve the health of our waterways.”
