Going, Going ...Gone? The Most Abundant Tree in Hawaii Is Dying and There's No Cure in Sight

"Rapid 'Ōhi'a Death" has killed over 135,000 acres on the Big Island of Hawaii, and disappearance of Ōhi'a forests could have serious ramifications for watersheds and ecosystems in the state.

But for native Hawaiians, who along with their ancestors revere the tree, vanishing Ōhi'a could mean the loss of a heritage that developed long before they had a written language.

In their latest episode, H2O Radio is reporting on this problem.

  1. Sorry to hear of the problem. The best solution is: when nature has been interrupted from doing its job return it to sustainable conditions ASAP.  Fortunately the problem has been identified and is easily repaired.  Trees had their immune systems attacked by volcanic gases, could not breathe, uptake their nutrients,  making them vulnerable  to anything out their.  Since the primary destructor is2 types of fungi a counter microbe is required to eliminate them. step 2 is reestablishing their immune system. Basically food and water, and you do need to check the soil ph. Usually after ash it becomes more acidic. Microbes help modify soil for plant grown.  Returning soil to sustainable conditions requires tons of compost. Local Organic organizations usually have a stock pile.  But since Volcanos will continue you ALL need to be making your own compost. Kitchen scraps, yard clippings, grocery stores, restaurant leftovers, etc.  The specific microbial group that makes all of this possible is called Archaea . A few of your nurseries carry it. But for bulk orders just go to their website and  order yourselves.  www.archaeaproducts.squarespace.com  send questions with this or website email address.  Good luck.
