India’s water management has been on an unsustainable path for centuries. Some 70 years ago, it was possible to have enough water for all uses for most of the time unless there were prolonged droughts. However, as population, urbanisation and industrialisation have increased, India’s water situation has steadily worsened. Consistently, poor water and land management practices have ensured that the country’s water situation is such that no other earlier generations have faced it.
