Just how much water IS there, really? I am involved in many sustainable development areas, one of which is the new emphasis on "Green Hydrogen" for, well, just about EVERYTHING! "Green Hydrogen" is defined as hydrogen produced by the electrolysis of water with renewable energy. It sounds good (as most do) at the start, but then I started thinking beyond the simple(?) economics and pollution issues to the fact that ALL of that hydrogen has to come from WATER. Salinated or not isn't clear, but it will certainly impact available sites for desalination for drinking water. And, while "renewable", the cycle does NOT simply return used water to the ecosphere. It is all expelled into the atmosphere in the gas phase, post-combustion in an engine.
SO, is the Potable Water Community aware of this potential impact and possible conflict in resource uses? Is anyone asking Regulators or Legislators about studies (similar to environmental impact statements for other projects) or requirements for those considerations in proposals? For government budgets (our taxes!) to "incentivize" energy projects, what is really more important to the larger community, transportation or potable water? Do we have the right priorities globally?
