Theme Note Water supply issues and sustainability are emerging as a major concern with stricter discharge norms dictating plant designs to incorporate technological solutions in order to minimizing water use. The scarcity of water resources, concerns about the environmental impact of industrial wastewater discharge and increasing regulatory controls make a compelling case for recycling and reuse. A key tool against water scarcity is the Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) concept. This concept is based on the use of techniques and processes that make it possible to reuse all polluted effluents. ZLD is the next generation of wastewater recovery methodology for industrial applications, resulting in significant benefits. The technology used to achieve ZLD depends largely on the type of the industry. A ZLD system involves a range of advanced wastewater treatment technologies to recycle, recovery and reuse of the treated wastewater and thereby ensure there is no discharge of wastewater to the environment. However, the main aim is to purify the water up to the level that can be reused for every application. The implementation of a ZLD system based on the zero waste concepts involves the treatment of all liquid waste to such an extent that its quality allows it to be reintroduced into the process, hence minimizing final rejection. Our November 2015 issue will be focusing on latest developments in Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) solutions and its revolutionary treatment system for the total elimination of wastewater effluent into the waterways.
