In a move that seeks to improve access to clean water in the region, Arusha Urban Water and Sanitation Authority (AUWSA) has set aside Sh 467 billion to be channeled towards various sanitation programmes.

“The investment will include among other projects, the drilling of 30 water wells across the region,” detailed Ruth Koya, an executive director with AUWSA.

Speaking to reporters over the weekend, she said the investment entails improving the availability of clean water in places worst hit with scarcity.

"We intend to increase water access because at the moment Arusha still suffers major water shortages,” said Eng Koya.

She said the investment will also facilitate construction of water treatment dams for River Themi. She took the opportunity to highlight that her office has increased availability of clean water from 56.2 kilometres to a radius of 312 kilometres of the city centre.

The region which depends on Pangani River Basin for its water, has recently been experiencing acute shortages attributed to an exploding population. Areas worst hit by the shortages include densely populated areas of  Kisongo, Sakina, Kwa Mrombo and parts of Ngaramtoni.
