The title is somehow misleading... the alternative is to replace the existing pipes with PP or PVC pipes for sewers. For drinking water trenchless solutions with HDPE are very effective or PVC-O if digging a trench is acceptable.  Plastic pipes are definitively safe, easy and cost-effective.
